The Green Flash

A green flash, which occurs more commonly at sunset — but can also occur at sunrise — is a phenomenon in which part of the sun can be observed suddenly and briefly changing color. It usually lasts only a second or two — which is why it is referred to as a flash — as the sun changes from red or orange at sunset.

Chapel By-The-Sea

A beautiful, quaint chapel and cemetery located on Captiva Island. The cemetery originally served as a pioneer cemetery and contains graves as far back as 1897. The building was originally the first schoolhouse on the island.

The J.N. "Ding" Darling National Wildlife Refuge is located on the subtropical barrier island of Sanibel in the Gulf of Mexico. The refuge is part of the largest undeveloped mangrove ecosystem in the United States. It is world famous for its spectacular migratory bird populations.

Southwest Florida International Airport

Southwest Florida International Airport is a county-owned airport in the South Fort Myers region of unincorporated Lee County, Florida.In 1988 the airport exceeded its annual capacity of 3 million passengers; by 2004, the airport was serving nearly 7 million passengers annually. The original terminal had 17 gates on two concourses. While three of the gates were added in a minor expansion of the B concourse in the late 1990s, the original terminal's design was not conducive to a major expansion.

Pine Island Sound

Designated as an Aquatic Preserve in 1970, this is the second largest of the five Charlotte Harbor Aquatic Preserves. In Pine Island Sound, waters from Charlotte Harbor, San Carlos Bay and the Caloosahatchee River mix with water from four passes to the Gulf of Mexico. Supports extensive seagrass habitats. Mangroves fringe many barrier islands and smaller islands found throughout the aquatic preserve. Nature-based recreation includes fishing, kayaking, birding, wading and beachcombing at Cayo Costa State Park, Ding Darling National Wildlife Refuge, Sanibel Island, Cabbage Key.

Salty Sam\\\'s Pirate Cruises
